I’m so very ready for Spring now and there’s nothing like painting from holiday photos to banish the grey, wet days away. This one is from the south of France last year and is inspired by the Fauvists use of hot and cold, bright, bright colours.

Sweet Williams are one of my best-est, most favourite, happiest, rewarding plants to grow, buy or paint.

Apparently they are named after either the 18th century Prince William or William Shakespeare

I love painting them – I love the colours, the zig-zag petal edges, the way the colours bleed and the patterning.

I often make myself little notes of encouragement to pin-up around the studio.

This one is to keep me persevering! If you want to download a copy for yourself there is a pdf here if you click the link: Claire_Leggett_Persevere Pinks.jpg you can print it off and share the encouragement 🙂

This is the vintage teacup that I began as my demo on patterned watercolours last Saturday with The Spotted Dog art group.

As usual it’s a brightly coloured painting – a typical Claire Leggett painting! but maybe a little more so because it wasn’t an especially well lit room and I may have over compensated with my choice of orange hue!

I’ll let you be the judge of that – I have spent a couple of hours finishing it off in my studio and am happy enough to say “ta daaah….”

I have been a creative powerhouse of late painting away left, right and centre. So in these last few days I have tried to focus on finishing off some of my first ideas. You may recall already seeing the little bird in pic 1. He’s been propped up for sometime tweeting to me ‘I am a nice little birdie – could you paint around me and make me the star of a painting?’

Not the first time a painting has talked to me! And although it’s not my favoured way of going about things I painted in a background around him and gave him a bowl of raspberries to share the stage with.

The title makes me laugh because all I could think about was William Morris’ famous Strawberry Thief so ‘Raspberry Sneak’ is a poor emulation! If anyone can think of a better title I am open to re-naming him…
