‘Every cloud has a silver lining’ as they say. My two paintings (Bellis and Blossom) made their journey to London after being pre-selected on-line but were not selected for the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours 2012 exhibition. Hey ho.
But I’m seeing the bigger picture, literally. As I have to go and collect them I booked tickets to see Hockney’s A Bigger Picture exhibition and I’m beyond excited about that.
We will need to kill time as our tickets are early evening ones so any ideas of things to do, places to go, wonderful shops that must be visited that will help us while away some hours? I feel like it’s time I broadened my triangle of London love from Liberty, Anthropologie and Designers Guild so some new recommendations would be interesting to try.

There is a fabulous cake shop on Theobalds road called Bea’s of Bloomsbury (next to Holborn library). I can highly recommend the carrot cake, it really is to die for. It is tiny, but if you get a squashy corner seat, you can curl up with a book, a pot of tea and a piece of cake and while away a happy hour or more.

I only recently discovered a textile addict’s heaven in Berwick Street, Soho, though it’s been there over a quarter of a century, apparently! Cloth House has two premises there, for some reason. I’ve been to the one with the white frontage (No. 47) and delightful it was, though they were very protective about people taking pics, so I didn’t! Some truly lovely fabric and other bits & bobs to feast your eyes upon: http://www.clothhouse.com/ And walking distance from Liberty.

Oh, and commiserations about the disappointment. There’ll be many more opportunities. I’m glad you’re looking on the bright side.

Commiserations from me too…but never mind, you got quite a long way really and next time might be the one you are picked so onwards and upwards! Ever since I was a student (a looong time ago) a trip to London for me always includes a visit to the V and A…..there is always something inspiring for me there from wonderful new exhibitions to fantastic textile archives. and what is more you can look at the archives and are encouraged to take photos…I saw the most wonderful samplers there when I wrote my first book…..I love the new Hockney paintings, have always enjoyed his work and love how he is always trying something new and being freshly inspired…….enjoy your new paintings too, Claire, they are beautiful.

I can reccommend a wonderful art shop called Cornelissen in Great Russell Street, and also a bookbinding shop called Shepherds Falkiners for lots of beautiful patterned paper and things

Oh HUGE hugs to you and your courageous heart for putting yourself forward… it’s always hard when others are deciding what is “suitable or not”, especially when we create from the unique place in life we hold.
I so admire you for trying anyways and do hope you keep going till you get the dream wished for
Enjoy those hours in London..Afraid I’ve no suggestions but rather am jotting all the ones down that have mentioned… never know when I may make a trip south of the border

Sorry to hear your paintings weren’t selected – but there’s always the next year! Of course I’m jealous about you going to see David’s exhibition and going to London too, but I can always dream… and say that if I were going to London soon, I’d probably go to see the tea house that was metioned in the current issue of the online “91 Magazine” – Le Chandelier!

Lechandelier looks gorgeous but is too far out of town for tomorrow – one day though! Thanks for the suggestion.
