One of my favourite things to do when setting up a still life to paint, is to rifle through my fabric cupboard and try out different patterns and colours for possible backgrounds. Photographing them and seeing it tried out on screen somehow crystalises the choice for the front runner to go ahead and star in the show.
So lets play a little game this week… leave me a comment saying which background you would have chosen and lets see if great minds think alike and I’ll let you know what I went ahead and painted

my eyes have jumped straight to the little blue checked one……though the one with the polka dots like the cherry make me smile….you’ve put me right in the mood for a bit of Mr Kipling now

Hmmm very tricky, they all have merit. But if it were my choice I think I would choose the pink gingham, for me it has the prefect balance of colour, pattern and vibrancy without overpowering the plate! ♥

The colour of ideas
At first I thought the red spot background but then I decided I prefer the blue with the white spot, because I like the way the plate almost begins to blend in. I think it has a very nice flow through the picture.

Hmm this is tricky. I first thought of the blue and white spotted background but changed my mind to the red spotted one because the plate has a red spot and so does the cake ergo they all let the eye pick something in common. I suspect I am overthinking this and should go with my gut instinct!

It is a tough choice! I like all three on the left column, but I think my favorite is the pink gingham too. Just enough contrast but still engaging. I love this game!

I am in the pink gingham fan club too, somehow it makes it less ‘grey’ without being too zingy zangy zongy (to quote Ben from outnumbered!)

I’d go with the 2nd row 1st from the left. Somehow I think that it would be very “you”, if you know what I mean. I’m intrigued now… which one will you choose…hmm…?

If I were painting it I would probably choose the pink gingham, as it seems the most harmonious to me. But the red polka dot is fun and quirky with the cherry topped cake so I might do that too! Looking forward to seeing which you did….can’t wait for the big reveal!!

I love the red spotty one, but my first choice was bottom right and then changed my mind and went for pink gingham and then changed it again and
went back to the red spotty one! Glad it’s not me that has to choose!
